Sports Medicine
You don’t have to be a member of the practice to be seen for a sports or musculoskeletal type consultation and you will receive the same caring, thorough approach. Patients from throughout the country seek out Dr. Niedfeldt's care for diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries as well as exercise prescriptions and medical care of active individuals.
Part of the treatment program Dr. Niedfeldt provides is therapeutic injections for chronic ligament and tendon injuries. This can be done using prolotherapy, amniotic/chorionic membrane graft, or platelet rich plasma therapy.
Prolotherapy is a therapy in which a dextrose solution (sugar water) is injected into the ligament or tendon at the point it attaches to the bone. This causes a localized inflammation, which increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients to the tissue and stimulates the tissue to repair itself in these weak areas. This treatment is useful for many different types of musculoskeletal pain, including arthritis, sports injuries, chronic tendonitis, partially torn tendons, ligament and cartilage injuries.
Amniotic/chorionic membrane grafts have over 226 growth factors which are beneficial in the healing of chronic tendon issues, ligament and sports injuries, and can be useful in treating osteoarthritis.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a newer treatment for sports and musculoskeletal injuries which is becoming more commonly used as more research and experience is showing excellent results. This technique involves the process of concentrating the healing factors in our blood (found in the platelets) and placing them directly into the damaged tissue. This treatment is useful for sports injuries, chronic ligament and tendon strains that have failed other conservative treatments, and osteoarthritis.
These injection techniques can be useful for:
• Shoulder pain
• Elbow pain – lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
• Hip pain, hip arthritis
• Sports hernias/groin pain
• Hamstring strains
• Knee pain, knee arthritis
• Ankle sprains
• Achilles tendinitis
• Plantar fasciitis
• SI joint/low back pain
• Other chronic tendon or ligament problems
